Seafarers International Union of North America

The Seafarers International Union ( SIU) is the umbrella organization of twelve autonomous trade unions of seafarers, fishermen and boatmen working on moving under U.S. or Canadian flag vessels. The union has about 35,000 members and is the largest Seegewerkschaft the United States. Headquartered in Camp Springs, Maryland.

History

The SIU was founded on 14 October 1938 in the turbulent times of the Great Depression and the growing strength of the worldwide Communist movements. SIU 's roots go back to 1892, met as delegates of trade unions in the West Coast, the Great Lakes and the Gulf of Mexico on a sailor's conference in Chicago. The conference was probably the decisive factor for the merger of the maritime unions, which later became known as " International Seamen's Union ( ISU) " was founded as a member union of the American Federation of Labor ( AFL). Since 1988, Michael Sacco is the president of the union.
