Sean Burke began his career in 1984 in the Canadian Junior Football League OHL with the Toronto Marlboros. In 1985 NHL Entry Draft, he was selected by the New Jersey Devils in the second round to 24th place. After another season in Toronto, he played for almost three years for the Canadian national team, with whom he took fourth place at the World Ice Hockey Championship in 1987 and at the Olympic Winter Games 1988.

The 2006/07 season he finished first at the Springfield Falcons, the AHL farm team of the Lightnings, before the Los Angeles Kings on 18 January 2007 chose him from the waiver list, as previously violated their two first-choice goalkeeper Mathieu Garon and Dan Cloutier had.

After the season, he was awarded a new contract, ending in September 2007 his career. A few months later he returned to the organization of the Phoenix Coyotes, where he is responsible for the training of young talents in the role of Director of Prospect Development.
