Seán Potts

Seán Potts ( born 1930 in Dublin, † February 11, 2014 ) was an Irish musician.

Seán Potts grew up in a musical family: his uncle was the famous violinist Tommy Potts. The attempts of the family, to inspire him for the violin or the Uilleann Pipes failed: The Tin Whistle had it done to him. The mid-1950s he met Paddy Moloney and Michael Tubridy, with whom he worked a lot. End of the fifties, there was a band with Paddy Moloney, Seán Potts, banjo player Barney McKenna (later of the Dubliners ). , Singer Larry Tracey and the prematurely deceased flutist and tap dancer paidi Bán Ó Broin, who laid great emphasis on the Gaelic language Paddy Moloney considers this formation today as the first incarnation of the Chieftains.

1959 came Potts and Moloney in Seán Ó Riadas band Ceoltoiri Chuallan, mainly in the Potts played tin whistle, as well as flute and percussion. He later became a founding member of the Chieftains. Here he can be heard on the albums The Chieftains The Chieftains 1 to 8. In 1968 he got together with Martin Fay from short to work in the Gael Linn Cabaret, but was in time for album No. 2 back for sure.

In 1973 he published along with Paddy Moloney Album "Tin Whistles " on the only two tin whistles can be heard ( with bodhran accompaniment by Peadar Mercier ).

After the album The Chieftains 8 he left along with Tubridy the band in 1979, especially because of his fear of flying. In the following years he worked for the radio and wrote and played among other things, Pieces for Radio Éireann Telefís.

In 1988 he founded for an album and a tour, the band Bakerswell in which his son Seán Potts played the Uilleann Pipes óg. Other members were the violinists Kevin Glackin, John Kelley Jr., John McEvoy, the flute player Mick Hand and the harpist Noirin O'Donoghue.

On the occasion of the death of Derek Bell 2002 he played again with his old colleagues The Chieftains in the original cast. In 2010 he published at the age of almost 80 years, his first solo album (" Number 6"). He died on February 11, 2014 at the age of 83 years.
