Sebastes

Sebastes carnatus

Sebastes is one, comprising over 100 species of fish species of the family of spiked heads ( Sebastidae ). The best-known species of the genus is known as a food fish redfish ( Sebastes norvegicus).

About two thirds of Sebastes species occur in the northeastern Pacific Ocean off coast of North America, about 35 species in the Pacific Northwest, two or three off the coasts of Peru and Chile, five in the North Atlantic and South Atlantic and southeastern Pacific Ocean on the coast of Patagonia.

Features

Sebastes species act harshly like and have a stocky, laterally flattened body with a large head and mouth. The head is normally provided with bony ridges and spines. The Vorkiemendeckel is usually equipped with five spines. Most species are 30 to 60 cm long, the largest reach a length of about one meter. Sebastes species are often patterned red or a different color with colorful stripes and spots. Many species can be distinguished by their coloring. The hard - and weichstrahlige part of the dorsal fin has grown together. An indentation separates the front hartstrahligen section from the rear, which is supported by a sting and subsequent soft rays. The caudal fin is rounded, is currently completing or slightly emarginate. The pelvic fins are rounded or wedge-shaped.

  • Fins formula: Dorsal XII-XV/9-16, Anal 3/5-9.

Way of life

Sebastes species are predators and come in rocky areas (English Misc " Rockfish " ), Tang and kelp forests before. They have internal fertilization and are viviparous.
