Sebastian Anton Scherer

Sebastian Anton Scherer ( born October 3, 1631 Ulm, † August 26, 1712 in Ulm) was organist at Ulm Münster and German composer in the southern German musical tradition of the early Baroque.

Life

Scherer was baptized on October 4, 1631 in Ulm. His father was a native of Strasbourg in Alsace baker Peter Scherer. Sebastian Scherer first attended the Latin school in Ulm and was admitted to the local high school in 1649. About his musical education nothing more is known. However, it is obvious that it covered the face of the then usual scope of music instruction in the Latin schools and high schools, the daily choral singing, instrumental instruction for gifted students as well as several weekly hours of music theory, had an extensive basic training.

On June 17th of the year 1653 he was hired by the city of Ulm Council as Stadtmusicus and Vice - organist. He had the previous Sunday passed a test of his ability, by having played as uf the organ of his own componirten stuckhen before and after the sermon so want uf the violas. 1668 he was musical director and took over the management of the Collegium Musicum. After the death of the father Tobias Eberlin he took over on December 22, 1671 whose term of office as organist of Ulm Minster. This office he retained hold until the end of his life. In the years 1684/85 he should have served as organist at St. Thomas in Strasbourg.

Scherer ensemble

The Clipper ensemble was founded in 2001 by Thomas Müller in Ulm. It is dedicated to focus on the compositions Sebastian Anton Scherer, but also the music of other composers of the 16th and 19th century from Ulm and Upper Swabia. The cast varies from the quartet of soloists to 12-member vocal ensemble with instrumental accompaniment. Performances and concert programs are implemented in close cooperation with the House of History Ulm, Ulm Museum and the Association of Art and Archaeology in Ulm and Upper Swabia. Musical partner of the ensemble is the Ulmer Deanery cantor Andreas Weil, a renowned specialist in organ and harpsichord music Scherer.

Works

While the vocal compositions Scherer served works of Heinrich Schütz and Andreas Hammerschmidt as a model, the instrumental works were set to music in the style of Girolamo Frescobaldi.

  • Opus 2 ( 1664): Tabulatura in Cymbalo et Organo, Two books with short intonations, Fugues and Pedaltoccaten
  • 1680: Pressure at 14 Sonatas for 2 violins and viola da gamba
