Sebastián de Ocampo

Sebastian de Ocampo (born 15 century; † 16th century ) was a Spanish explorer. He was the first explorer who sailed around the entire island of Cuba in 1508. Under the command of the Governor of Hispaniola Ocampo sailed along the northern coast of Cuba to the Western Cape San Antonio. The journey lasted for eight months of the Gulf Stream. Europeans had often visited Cuba before Ocampo undertook his journey. But only his circumnavigation confirmed that this country actually surrounded by water and thus an island and no peninsula of the time still held for Chinese or Indian mainland was. With this message, Ocampo returned to Hispaniola. Through his reports the cards of Christopher Columbus could be supplemented and improved.
