Sebastian von Hoerner

Sebastian Rudolf Karl von Hoerner ( born April 15, 1919 in Görlitz, Lower Silesia, † January 7, 2003 in Esslingen am Neckar, Baden- Württemberg ) was a German astrophysicist and radio astronomer.

Family

He came from a family from the Cheb region (Bohemia ), who rose in 1568 in the Polish nobility and was in 1620 registered at the Courland knighthood, and was the son of the writer and painter Herbert von Hoerner ( 1884-1946 ) and the writer Susanne Heintze, after the Marriage of Hoerner - called Heintze ( 1890-1978 ).

Hoerner married on April 28, 1942 in Görlitz Lisa Müller (born 22 November 1913 in Neusalz on the Oder, County Frey City, Lower Silesia ), the daughter of the teacher and businessman Fritz Müller and Frieda Lange.

Life

Hoerner earned his doctorate in 1951 at the University of Göttingen in physics. With his supervisor, Prof. Carl Friedrich von Weizsäcker, he conducted research on the formation of stars and globular clusters. This work and studies on the dynamics of star clusters he sat at the Astronomical Institute in Heidelberg rake continued under the direction of Professor Walter Fricke. In 1959 he completed his habilitation at the University of Heidelberg with an investigation into the temporal rate of star formation. He led at the Astronomical Institute rake through the first direct N-body simulations of star clusters, the results of which he published in two articles from 1960 and 1963.

Sebastian von Hoerner is one of the pioneers of SETI research and worked for many years at the Green Bank Observatory in the analysis and technical optimization of radio telescopes. He described the principle of homologous deformation in the design of large radio telescopes: Instead of trying to prevent deformation when another position of the telescope by stiffening, take this into account and ensures that the reflector of the telescope at any position again usable in a paraboloid deformed. He was a visiting professor at universities in the USA, Mexico, Germany and Switzerland.

He died in 2003 after a heart attack.
