Sebastian Weigle

Sebastian Weigle (* 1961 in Berlin ) is a German horn player and conductor.

Life

Sebastian Weigle studied at the Academy of Music " Hanns Eisler" Berlin horn, piano and conducting. In 1987 he founded the Chamber Choir Berlin, later, he headed the New Berlin Chamber Orchestra. He played 15 years as principal horn of the Berlin Staatskapelle. He also was a member of the jazz orchestra " Philharmonic Society " in East Berlin. He was chief conductor of the State Youth Symphony Orchestra Brandenburg and 1997 principal conductor at the Staatsoper Unter den Linden in 1993. He has appeared in numerous opera houses, including the Staatsoper Dresden, Frankfurt Opera, the Vienna Volksoper and the Vienna State Opera and the Metropolitan Opera in New York. 2003 elected him the Opernwelt Conductor of the Year for the Langer's staging of Die Frau ohne Schatten at the Frankfurt Opera with director Christof Nel. From 2004 to 2008 he was Music Director of the Weigle Gran Teatre del Liceu in Barcelona. In November 2005, Sebastian Weigle was appointed music director of the Frankfurt Opera from the season 2008/2009. He went there with the start of the season in the footsteps of Paolo Carignani. At the Bayreuth Festival Weigle conducted since 2007 a ​​new production of Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg (directed by Katharina Wagner).

Weigle is a nephew of the conductor and music educator Jörg- Peter Weigle and the brother of the violist Friedemann Weigle (Artemis Quartet).
