Sebastiano Antonio Tanara

Sebastiano Antonio Tanara ( born April 10, 1650 in Rome, † May 5, 1724 ) was an Italian cardinal.

Life

Tanara studied law at the University of Bologna. From 1675 to 1687 he served as nuncio in Flanders and was entrusted with a mission related to King James II of England, who had converted to Catholicism. In 1687, he was appointed Titular Archbishop of Damascus. From 1687 to 1690 he was papal nuncio in Cologne, from 1690 to 1692 in Portugal and 1692 to 1696 the German Emperor in Vienna. Pope Innocent XII. appointed him in December 1695 to cardinal priests. On May 21 In 1696 he received the Church of Santi Quattro Coronati in Rome as the titular church. Tanara participated in the conclave of 1700, in which Clement XI. was elected Pope. From 1703 to 1715 he was Legate in Urbino. On April 1, 1715 he was consecrated bishop of the diocese of Frascati suburbicarian and on March 3, 1721 as Bishop of Ostia. As dean of the Sacred College, he sat before the conclave of 1721, in which Innocent XIII. was elected Pope.

Tanara died in 1724 during the period of vacancy after the death of Innocent XIII. , He opened the conclave, which Benedict XIII. on May 29, 1724 Pope chose, on March 20, 1724 and directed it, but had to leave due to an illness already on April 15.
