Career

Beginnings and lending (1979-1986)

1979, at the age of 15 years, Rossi joined his hometown club AC Cesena, where he remained faithful during his youth. At 18, you gave Rossi from there to the then third division side AS Forlì, for which he made eleven games in a season. To be with the hope of Cesena goalkeeper in 1983 he came back to the province, without being able to make in the 1983/84 season also just a game. So he moved again on loan to Empoli FC, but returned after a disappointing season without the use back to Cesena. Here they kept him not long again and arranged a lending transaction with Rondinella Calcio, where Rossi was in 28 games in goal and made the breakthrough.

Goalkeeper in Cesena (1986-1990)

In Cesena, he was first employed after his return in 1986 in the B series and could displace as goalkeeper consequently other inserts Stefano Dadina. At the end of the season he reached Cesena offs for promotion to Serie A and was able to prevail against U.S. Lecce there after a victory in the decider. As a climber of the AC came on the opening day of the 1987/88 season away to Napoli and when Rossi was in goal Cesena his debut in Serie A. After a further 29 match days, the team with Rossi in goal, Agostino Di Bartolomei was in midfield and Ruggiero Rizzitelli by storm as a table in ninth best climber of the year. After both Di Bartolomei and Rizzitelli had to leave the club in the summer was Cesena with Rossi, who exposed only in a game, thirteenth, and thus had only two points clear of the relegation zone. During the summer break, coach Alberto Bigonville was replaced by Marcello Lippi, who thus for the first time took a coaching position in Serie A. This put Rossi in all league games and led Cesena like its predecessor on the thirteenth place in the table.

Title kingdoms years at the Rossoneri (1990-1995)

In 1990 he went to Lombardy to AC Milan. The reigning European champions had made his goalkeeper to Napoli in the summer break with Giovanni Galli and thus Rossi became the second man behind Andrea Pazzagli. So he came up with nine league inserts, but was in the Coppa Italia always in the starting lineup. After Pazzagli moved to the new season for FC Bologna was Rossi of new first-choice goalkeeper and won with the Rossoneri his first championship. The Scudetto was defended in the following season and was achieved in the newly formed UEFA Champions League in the final. There, they lost in the Munich Olympic Stadium Olympique Marseille 0-1 through a header from Basile Boli. Next year the championship was again defended as well as the Champions League reaches the final. This time it was at the Athens Olympic Stadium, FC Barcelona, the opponents and this was surprisingly clear defeated 4-0. Shortly before the end of the year Rossi was eventually Azzurra called twice in the squad for the Squadra, but not used. Since the AC Milan at that time with Franco Baresi, Paolo Maldini, Alessandro Costacurta and Mauro Tassotti had a fairly strong defensive line had Rossi rare opportunities to excel, so this remained his only nominations for the national team. In the club he was more successful in 1994 presented 929 minutes without conceding in Serie A, a record which still apply today and managed to 1995 with AC for the third time in a row, reaching the final of the UEFA Champions League. The final opponent was the young team of Ajax Amsterdam, which had recently been defended the championship under coach Louis van Gaal. Rossi was against the Dutch until 85 minutes without conceding a goal, before substitute Patrick Kluivert scored the 1-0 winning goal.

Failure and goalkeeper power struggles (1995-2003)

Since Milan had lost the final to Amsterdam and brought only the fourth place in Serie A, took it in the next not participate in the Champions League. Instead, went to the team in the UEFA Cup, where usually the substitute were used and thus remained Rossi at all the games on the bench. The Rossoneri eliminated in the quarter- final against Girondins Bordeaux and focused on the league. There, Mario Ielpo returned to international missions on the bench back and made room for Rossi, who played in all 34 league games. Here, the Ascensore Umano remained ( German: human elevator) - so his nickname - fifteen times without conceding a goal and won with the AC on the 32nd Round after a 3-1 win over Fiorentina the Italian championship. Before the start of season 1996/97 Fabio Capello left Milan for Real Madrid and was replaced by Giorgio Morini. This was released relatively quickly and his successor Arrigo Sacchi Rossi replaced occasionally by the younger Angelo Pagotto, so Rossi spent a total of eight games on the bench. After the season was unsuccessful for both Milan and for Capello in Madrid returned this back to San Siro. At the beginning of the season Capello gave the neuverpflichteten Massimo Taibi confidence as the number one and Rossi landed for the first time during his career in Milan in the long term on the bench. The whole first round he had no use, before Capello during the winter break reversed its decision and Rossi previously gave confidence as in past years. So he kept the entire rest of the season the Gate of Milan and also played in his only finals matches at the start of Coppa Italia. In the final first leg Milan won 1-0 and also went in the second leg in the lead, but in the end lost 1-3 against Lazio. Consequently, the season ended without a title and Capello was replaced by Alberto Zaccheroni, who presented the neuverpflichteten of Schalke 04 Jens Lehmann into the goal. The had to bad reviews after just a few uses his place in goal clear for Rossi and changed into the winter break to Borussia Dortmund. Rossi so the remaining 13 first round games in goal had in the second half but again on the bench, as the also neuverpflichtete from AC Monza Christian Abbiati got the confidence of coach Zaccheroni. This could no longer repress Rossi in the following years, and so he moved to twelve years in Milan 2002 AC Perugia. There he was in his only season not prevail against Zeljko Kalac and ended after 13 appearances for Perugia his career at the age of 38 years.
