Sebastiano Timpanaro

Sebastiano Timpanaro FBA ( born September 5, 1923 in Parma, † November 26, 2000 in Florence ) was an Italian classical philologist, essayist, literary critic and committed Marxist.

Life

Timpanaro came from an intellectual and dedicated parents. His father was the physicist and historian of science Sebastiano Timpanaro Senior (1888-1949), who worked as a teacher and director of the Domus Galilaeana in Pisa, his mother Mary, historian of ancient science Timpanaro Cardini ( 1890-1978 ). He studied classical philology in Florence, where he was a pupil of the famous philologist Giorgio Pasquali. Equally influential was for him Eduard Fraenkel, who for several years held guest seminars at the Scuola Normale Pasqualis after death. His philosophical mentor was at this time Galvano della Volpe. After graduation, he worked as a teacher at vocational schools as the province of Pisa, then from 1960 to 1983 as a proofreader for the former Florentine publishing house La Nuova Italia. A career in academic teaching, he refused, apparently on the personalities concerned, from, however, developed a rich scientific activity. Politically active Timpanaro was in different groups of the Italian left (PSI, PSIUP and PdUP ).

Timpanaro been a member of the Accademia Nazionale dei Lincei and a Fellow of the British Academy. In 1995 he received the prestigious Premio Feltrinelli for filologia e linguistica.

Timpanaro was married to Maria Augusta Timpanaro Morelli.

Work

Timpanaro published numerous works on Latin and Greek philology and philology history, for connection of Marxism with the materialism of the Enlightenment and the critique of Freudian psychoanalysis. Through his political writings he took also impact on the political left as through his involvement in the political landscape of Italy.

Classical Philology

In his philological work, Timpanaro has been dealing with the micro- philological criticism and exegesis of ancient Latin, but also Greek texts and their transmission, which found expression in numerous articles, notes and miscellanea, which he summarized in two volumes. In this context, Timpanaro sat apart with linguistics. Closely related to his philological work was his interest in the history of classical philology, which had been nurtured by his teacher Giorgio Pasquali. Among the Latin authors Timpanaro has especially dedicated to Virgil and the ancient philology Virgil and Ennius. In his philology historical work The Origin of Lachmann 's method Timpanaro examines the diverse starting points that Karl Lachmann had systematically combined to form named after him and has since been revised, but in its basic features still used method of critical elaboration of an ancient text.

Enlightenment and Italian Literature of the 19th Century

At the materialistic- pessimistic thinking of Giacomo Leopardi Timpanaro estimates the fertility of the classic Enlightenment tradition, which remains connected to the rationalism of the 18th century and turns against the spirituality and religiosity of the Romantics. Timpanaros interest in the investigation is also in an Italian translation of the anonymously published newspaper Le Bon Sens Baron d' Holbach of. In an essay from 1980 entitled Di alcune falsificazioni di scritti leopardiani Timpanaro has demonstrated that the three sketches for Leopardi Canto L' Infinito, which had been published by Francesco Flora in the collected works, forgeries.

Materialism and Marxism

Within the Currents of Marxism Timpanaro positioned himself as a Marxist humanist. He took the view that materialism as a fundamental element of Marxism was of great importance, however, emphasized after Leopardi which depends on nature of the human condition in contrast to the theory of a purely social conditioning. The five essays that are combined in his work Sul materialismo seen as major opinion on this field.

Critique of psychoanalysis

In his book on the so-called Freudian slip Timpanaro shows convincingly that the slip of the tongue, the Sigmund Freud in his book compiles The Psychopathology of Everyday Life (1901 ) following Rudolf Meringers psycholinguistic study promises and misreading (1895 ) and interpreted psychoanalytically, also let by the typical errors occurring repeatedly during the Abschreibprozesses in the manuscript tradition of ancient texts, explain.
