Second Cabinet of Kostas Karamanlis

The Cabinet Kostas Karamanlis II ruled Greece 19 September 2007 to 7 October 2009 and was followed by the Cabinet Kostas Karamanlis I.

Minister

All members of this government were members of the New Democracy party.

Reign

After the parliamentary elections in Greece in 2007, the New Democracy could barely decide for themselves, Karamanlis was given the opportunity to continue his government work, among others, the completion of the Egnatia Odos and the Acropolis Museum. However, due to the global financial crisis violated in December 2008, five Member States of the euro zone against the Stability and Growth Pact, one of them was Greece. The country's economy collapsed because the crisis affected more on the areas of shipping and tourism. The government of Karamanlis was not master of the situation and the pressure on the Prime Minister increased domestic and foreign policy to continue. In spring 2009, the European Commission initiated an excessive deficit procedure against Greece, the Karamanlis wanted to counter with an austerity package. However, the measures were not enough to defuse the financial crisis and to save the country from a looming recession; so Karamanlis decided to let the people decide whether it still wanted to express trust him and his government, and asked early September 2009 when President Karolos Papoulias to dissolve Parliament, which should lead the country to new elections.

Sequence

In the early parliamentary election in Greece in 2009, the conservative New Democracy party was only the second strongest force behind the social democratic PASOK.

Thus, the Karamanlis Cabinet II was replaced by the Cabinet Giorgos Papandreou.
