Secret Treaty of Dover

The Secret Treaty of Dover was closed on June 1, 1670 Agreement between Charles II, King of England, and the French king Louis XIV, who foresaw an alliance of the two countries against the United Netherlands and the conversion of Charles II to Catholicism. France promised the payment of 2,000,000 livres a year and a military force of 6,000 men to support Charles II against internal uprisings. Although the English King never officially converted, the contract weakened the political position of Protestantism in England considerably, but could not unfold its full potential due to strong resistance, especially in the needle. The secret agreement was a prerequisite for the start of the Dutch war, in which England and France in 1672 jointly attacked the United Netherlands.
