Secretariat of Agriculture, Livestock, Rural Development, Fisheries and Food
The Secretaría de Agricultura, Ganadería, Desarrollo Rural, Fisheries and Food ( SAGARPA ) is the political " office ( the government) for Agriculture, Livestock, Rural Development, Fisheries and Food " in Mexico, comparable to a Ministry of Agriculture.
The Secretariat was originally established as the " Secretariat for Agriculture and promotion " ( Secretaría de Agricultura y Fomento ) in 1946 extended to the Secretaría de Agricultura y Ganadería. With the merger with the Secretaría de Recursos Hidráulicos founded in 1947, in 1976 by President José López Portillo, the task field of agricultural irrigation was added and the Secretariat contributed to 1994, then the name Secretaría de Agricultura y Recursos HIDRAULICOS. From 1994, the Secretariat was called Secretaría de Agricultura, Ganadería y Desarrollo Rural, and since 2000 it assumed its present name.
The SAGARPA is divided into three sub- secretariats ( Subsecretarías ) for " Agriculture " ( Agricultura ), "Land Development" and " promoting the agricultural sector " ( Fomento a los Agronegocios ) and the General Coordination Unit for animal husbandry ( Coordinación General de Ganadería ).
