Secure User Plane Location
Secure User Plane Location ( SUPL ) is a protocol for Assisted GPS. SUPL has been specified by the Open Mobile Alliance and is used for rapid determination of GPS satellite data on so-called Userplane support protocols such as IP. This position information can be obtained much faster in general than about GPS satellite signal (50 b / s).
SUPL is based on existing standards like about OMA Push, OMA Mobile Location Service, and various 3GPP/3GPP2 standards.
Architecture
The SUPL architecture includes two main elements:
- SUPL SUPL Enabled Terminal device called (SET )
- SUPL Location Platform (SLP)
The SET is a mobile terminal to which a SUPL client has been installed and configured. The SLP is a network element, usually a standalone server, which takes care about to user authentication, location requests, and roaming. The communication between the mobile terminal and the SLP takes place using standard protocols such as TCP / IP, as well as SMS.
Areas of application
Applications for SUPL are found mainly in the area of Location Based Services ( LBS) for mobile devices.
