Sedat Alp

Sedat Alp ( born January 1, 1913 in Selanik, today Thessaloniki, † 9 October 2006) was one of the most important Turkish Hittitologists.

Alp studied since 1932, first in Leipzig, then in Berlin, where he became in 1940 a PhD with the work studies on the officials' names in Hittite hard ceremonial. For many years he taught at the University of Ankara. Alp was considered an expert on Anatolian geography, engaged in Anatolian art, language, law and culture.

Alp was a member of the German Archaeological Institute, Corresponding Member of the humanities and social sciences class of the Academy of Sciences and Literature in Mainz. He was awarded in 1997 an honorary doctorate from the University of Würzburg. In 1988 he became a member of the British Academy.
