Seealpsee

The Seealpsee is at 1,143 m above sea level. M. Lake opposing the Alpsteinarea in Switzerland, in the canton of Appenzell Innerrhoden. An idyllic location, the clean water and two mountain restaurants make the Seealpsee one of the most popular attractions of the Alpsteinarea.

It is named after the adjacent " Seealp ". The first mention of 1682 refers to him as Lake Alper lake.

Red color

In July 2009 and 2010, the Seealpsee according to studies at the ETH Zurich and the universities of Zurich and Copenhagen from 2009 discolored by a high density of algae Tovellia sanguinea, a dinoflagellate species, red. This thrives particularly well in nutrient-poor lakes in at an altitude of 1000 meters. This is the first occurrence of red water discoloration caused by Tovellia sanguinea since the discoloration of Lake Tovel to 1964.

According to a notice dated 14 July 2010 of the Office of Environment and Conservation in the canton of Appenzell Innerrhoden, this effect is due to the formation of an oxygen-saturated sediment. The cause of the formation of which is in accordance with theory, the increasing purity of the lake by the continuously decreasing nutrient loading. To verify this hypothesis withdrawals professional divers a team at the University of Konstanz several specimens of Seesediments. These samples are incubated in the laboratory at the University of Konstanz from oxygen, as well as the absence of oxygen. If true, that develop dinoflagellates supply of oxygen better, this would be an interesting result because the red alga could be used as a bioindicator for optimum water quality.

Access paths

The Seealpsee can be reached in about 50 minutes walk from Wasserauen, the terminus of the Appenzell Railway, on a steep, paved road. A nichtasphaltierter slightly longer trail runs through the south-eastern side of the valley of Wasserauen ( hut Tobel ) for Seealpsee. A steep, but very nice path leads from the Ebenalp by a prehistoric cave, past the Wildkirchli to the inn Aescher, built at a steep rock crash against the rock.
