Seewoosagur Ramgoolam

Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam ( शिवसागर रामगुलाम ) ( born September 18, 1900 in Belle Rive, Mauritius, † December 15, 1985 in Port Louis) was from 26 September 1961 until June 16, 1982 and the first Prime Minister of 28 December 1983 until his death on December 15, 1985 Governor General of Mauritius. Under him the country became independent on 12 March 1968, after 150 years of British rule. He is therefore regarded as Mauritius ' "father of independence".

In 1973 he was awarded the Human Rights Award of the United Nations

Since July 2005, his son Navin Ramgoolam is prime minister. The Botanical Garden in Pamplemousses and the international airport of Mauritius ( colloquially Plaisance, IATA code MRU) are named after him.
