Seggiano

Seggiano is a municipality with 1010 inhabitants ( 31 December 2012) in the province of Grosseto, Tuscany region of Italy.

Geography

The municipality covers 50 km ². It is located about 40 km northeast of Grosseto and 100 km south of Florence near the Monte Amiata. The municipality is located in the Val d'Orcia and the vineyards of Montecucco. The rivers duck, Vetra and Vivo traverse the municipality. In the climatic classification of Italian municipalities is the place in Zone E, ​​2204 GG.

The only district is about 3 km south-east town located at the foot of the Amiata Pescina. It is situated at 747 meters above sea level and has about 150 inhabitants.

The neighboring municipalities are Abbadia San Salvatore ( SI), Castel del Piano and Castiglione d' Orcia (SI).

History

The first mention of the place is 903 as a possession of the monastery in Abbadia San Salvatore, and then succeeded in the early 13th century at the Abbey Sant 'Antimo and in the second half of the 13th century under the control of the Salimbeni in Siena. From the 15th century until the defeat of the Sienese Republic in 1555 against the Republic of Florence was Seggiano under the influence of the originating also from Siena Ugurgeri.   • Castello del Potentino, about 1 km south-west by the river Vivo location of Seggiano castle.
