The Segugio Italiano a pelo raso (it. for short -haired Italian Hound ) is recognized by the FCI Italian breed of dog (group 6, section 1.2, No. 337 ). It is closely related to the Segugio Italiano a pelo forte (FCI 198).

Origin and History

The Segugio Italiano a pelo raso is attributed to a history that extends far into antiquity. The breed is a descendant of hounds that were used in ancient Egypt to the pursuit of game, and were later taken by Phoenician merchants in the Mediterranean region and Italy. In drawings which come from different Pharaonic dynasties, dogs are shown, which are very similar to the Segugio. In particular, the drop ears of the dogs depicted are seen as a sign of advanced domestication.

Description

The body of these hounds is square, or about as high as long. Males are 52 to 58 cm high, bitches 48-56 cm. In excellent dogs of the breed standard allows for a deviation of ± 2 cm. The body is strong, the muscles should be well trained, and the skin should fit tightly (which is referred to as Canine dry). The head is viewed from above oval, the hanging ears are triangular in shape and are very broad. Neck and withers blend into one another, the withers occurs a little out of the straight topline, the harmonious drops from there and in the lumbar region has a slight curve. The tail is thin and shape refers to a breadstick. The coat is dense, short, narrowest basis and harsh. The standard allows the color spectrum in monochrome flab from dull to bright intense red and black and tan colored fur. Brown is not allowed. The Segugio Italiano a pelo raso should be 18 to 28 kg. His almond-shaped eyes should be dark ocher - colored and always have black eye rims.
