Segunda Liga

The Segunda Liga is the second highest league in Portuguese football. It was founded in 1990 under the name Segunda Divisão de Honra (Second Division of Honour ) as a single-track league and moved in front of the three-pronged Segunda Divisão, which thus became the third Portuguese top league. As in 2000, the Portuguese Professional League Association LPFP took over the first two divisions, the second highest league was called the Segunda Liga (Second League ). In the seasons 2002/ 03 to 2005 /06 was the official name of the 2nd Portuguese soccer league Liga de Honra, the Portuguese name for Eredivisie. For the 2007 /08 season the leagues name has been marketed commercially, although Liga de Honra continued to be used in common parlance. It is professionally operated and managed by the Liga Portuguesa de Futebol Profissional, organized from the professional clubs and the Portuguese Football Federation. The League originally consisted of 18 clubs that will be played in a round-trip round. Until the 2004/05 season the top three got into the first league, the Super League, and on the three last placed in the Segunda Divisão Portuguesa from. From the season 2006/ 07 the professional leagues were reduced to 16 participants, which is why only two climbers, but four losers were played in the 2005/06 season.

In the 2006/07 season the league was named after the main sponsor in Liga Vitalis. In the season 2010/11 was used as the official name of Liga Orangina. For the 2012/13 season the renamed again in Segunda League Series has been expanded to 22 teams and there are 2 each and losers.

For the 2014/2015 season a new outline is provided in a northern and a southern group, with twelve teams. Thus, after a first round lasting until Christmas are the six best placed teams in each group then each one climber play in the second half from Christmas to May, while the other six teams in each group determine a relegated team. The League intends the action to reduce the cost of game operations for the clubs.
