Geography

Geographical location

Sehlem located south of Hildesheim, south of Hildesheim Forest and west of the ridge Harplage.

Community structure

In addition to the main town Sehlem also the village belongs to the municipality Evensen Sehlem.

History

The name can be traced back to the 12th century, but its meaning is unclear. At the beginning of the 20th century the number of Sehlem 665 inhabitants and had a significant brickyard. At the southeastern edge of the village a breakpoint of the completed on October 1, 1902 Lamme rollercoaster of Hildesheim was set to Bad Gandersheim, which was further moved in the 1950s to about 600 m to the north near the town center.

The municipality was created in 1974 the Samtgemeinde Lamspringe attached, which has its administrative headquarters in the spots Lamspringe. The Sehlem station was closed in 1975 because of the stretch of land castle was shut down after bath home Gander. On the former railway line, which is still visible in the area of Sehlem, created a trail.

Mayor

The honorary mayor August Probst was late November 2006, unanimously re-elected in a row for the tenth time. He held office continuously since 1968.

Buildings and monuments

The west tower of the Protestant Cecilia Church with distinctive Eckquadern and with an eight-sided, verschieferten spire was built in 1494, the nave 1566. Exterior fall on the nave several massive, pre- walled buttresses on. In the eastern part of the church a bricked window is outside noteworthy, about the year 1566 is engraved. After several renovations, the church 1875/76 was redesigned in the sense of the Gothic Revival while its original appearance is restored.

In the center is also the Stone Sweden worth seeing, a memorial stone, reminiscent of the horrors of the Thirty Years' War.

  • Sehlem is connected via county roads with the B243 to the road network.
  • The high-speed line Hannover -Würzburg runs with the Viaduct Checkout mill by the municipality.
