Seixal ( IPA: [ sɘiʃæɫ ] ) is a district ( concelho ) and a city ( Cidade ) in Portugal, with 157 981 inhabitants (as at 30 June 2011).

History

Findings validate the presence of the Romans. The present city was created by colonizing here to fishermen. 1403 was built here with the Moinho da Maré in Corroios a first tidal mill, and emerged in the burgeoning shipbuilding of the Portuguese expeditions of the 15th century shipyards here. The local type of ship Varino still reminds us that tradition. Today's toponym evolved presumably from the large deposits of pebbles ( Portuguese: Seixo ), which were needed as ballast for cargo ships.

The Lisbon earthquake of 1755 caused widespread devastation. The present district was created in 1836. Importance for the further growth was the establishment of numerous industrial mid-20th century, in particular in 1961 the construction of the steel plant Siderurgia Nacional (2001 decommissioned). The opening of the Ponte 25 de Abril (then Ponte Salazar ) in 1966 caused a development impetus. 1993 learned the circle one final extension, by incorporation of Fernão Ferro.

Culture and sights

About 10% of the district belong to nature reserves, which are summarized here as Ecological Reserve Nacional. These include, inter alia, different wetlands ( Sapal de Corroios, Sapal de Talaminho ) and the Bay of Seixal, where flamingos and other bird species can be observed. The Ecomuseu has been present there with a visitor center and several smaller thematic exhibition sites and museums of local history in the county.

In addition to various religious buildings are, inter alia, the Boat Museum, located V.A. the local vessel type Varino dedicated, and to visit the excavations of the Roman pottery kiln from Quinta do Rouxinol.

The port facilities Estação Nautica since Baía do Seixal with Marina, excursion boats, gastronomy, among others be further expanded. Also, the cycle routes of the city and the county will be further expanded.

A curiosity are the decaying remains of the former luxury resort hotel do Muxito dar. It featured, among other things over 13 guest houses, an artificial lake, tennis courts, a small bullring, a miradouro with wide views, and swimming facilities Olympic standards. Even before the Carnation Revolution in 1974, the plant was abandoned. At the latest after the hotel was occupied by radical left-wing forces and partly destroyed inside in post-revolutionary furor, all plans to new concepts have been dropped. There is now an unreal -looking place, which is also used by geocaching search players.

The Festa do Avante! takes place every year in late summer one of the largest major cultural events of the country in a circle instead of, inter alia, with concerts, theater performances, exhibitions, gastronomy shows, readings and record fairs. Over half a million visitors come here on the weekend usually.

Sports

The International Badminton Championship Plume d'Or 1979 took place here.

The Seixal Futebol Clube, founded in 1925 is a major sports club with his football, futsal, basketball and roller hockey departments. His unterklassig playing professional football team was disbanded in 2007. The stadium Estadio do Bravo was then sold to Benfica, where after a remodeling 5,000 people can watch the games of amateur teams Benfica.

Other clubs in the district include, inter alia, Amora Futebol Clube, founded in 1925, the Sports Club Atlético Clube de Arrentela ( athletics, swimming, billiards, table tennis, basketball, cycling, football ), and also established in 1925 Paio Pires Futebol Clube.
