Region

The twin city of Sekondi -Takoradi is the capital of the Western Region (ie the Western Region ) of the West African country of Ghana.

Sekondi -Takoradi is located on the western coast of Ghana and with its approximately 335,000 inhabitants, is the third largest city in the country to Accra and Kumasi (Data on the numbers of inhabitants of the cities of Ghana, however, are not very precise). The residents of the twin city speak different native languages ​​, the most common being Ahanta, Nzema, Sehwi, Wasa, Brosa / Aowin ( dialects of Anyin ) and Gwira / Pepesa.

The economic significance of the city is derived from the local industry ( timber, cement, cigarettes, shipbuilding, railway repair shop ) and its central position in the traffic network in Ghana. The only two railway lines in the country of Accra and Kumasi end here and there is a large port.

Since 2008 there is a large, 20 000 people comprehensive sports stadium, the Sekondi -Takoradi Stadium.

1946 has been formed from the previously independent neighboring cities Sekondi Takoradi and the Twin Cities.

Sekondi

Emerged Sekondi, late 17th century by two British and Dutch forts (Fort Orange ( Ghana) and Fort Sekondi, see also here) around, this is the older part of town and seat of the regional administration. Here also there is a small fishing port with a boat yard and Ghana (not very big ) naval base. Sekondi benefited economically from the 1903 completed line to Kumasi and thus to the gold fields and logging areas in the Ashanti Region.

Sekondi is the seat of regional government for the Western Region.

Takoradi

The economically significant part of the city today is still the westernmost of Sekondi Takoradi. Also in Takoradi, there have been in the 17th century a small attachment ( Taccorary, see also here), the multiple of their European changed hands - among other things she was also Brandenburg- Prussian possession. Until the 1920s Takoradi was still just a small fishing village, still under the name Amanful. This only changed in 1920, as here, the first deep-water port was built and Takoradi Ghana received a rail link to nearby Sekondi. Today is the port of Takoradi to the port of Tema near Accra Ghana is the second largest. There are sawmills and other industries here. The airport of Takoradi was an important trading center on the trans-Atlantic supply route for the Allied forces in North Africa during World War II.

Education

Sekondi -Takoradi is a major educational center for the Western Region and throughout Ghana. It houses the Takoradi Polytechnic and one of the leading training centers in the country ( Takoradi Technical Institute TTI, 1,400 students in two shifts, training fields: automotive, electrical, mechanical, welding, plumbing, computer ), which was built with German funds and funded until 2005 ( GTZ / GOPA ).

The TTI is home to one with the help of MIT as part of the twinning Boston Sekondi -Takoradi (see below) furnished Fabrication Lab, the first of its kind in Africa.
