Sekyere South District

The district Afigya - Sekyere is one of 21 districts in the Ashanti Region of Ghana. It has a size of 770 square kilometers and about 117 653 inhabitants. The Afigya - Sekyere District is bordered on the south by the Kwabre District, southwest of the Atwima District, on the west by the Offinso District, on the north by the Ejura / Sekyedumase District, in the northeast and east by the Sekyere West District and a small distance in east by the Sekyere East District. The capital Agona is located about 10 kilometers north of Kumasi, the regional capital.

Economy

The economy of the district is characterized by a high share of employment in agriculture. Overall, about 64 percent of all employees work in this sector, in industry work only about 4 percent of employees in the service sector about 32 percent.

Main crops are cassava agriculture, plantain, yam and maize. Also, cocoa, citrus fruits, coffee and palm oil are grown, among others as a major export commodities. Overall, 6 percent of farms work exclusively for the sale of goods, 21 percent are only in the extension of its needs active. In 73 percent of the farms the crops are first used for their own consumption, but also produces surpluses that go into further sales.

67 Of all the businesses in the district to work in mixed cultivation, only 7 percent of farming monocultures, 4 percent work with the traditional method of alternating crops. 19 percent of companies hold next to the cultivation and cattle, and 3 percent of the companies belong to the forestry sector. Average farm size is 3,687 acres per farmer.

In District 38 farms are located. Here, the average livestock number is 20 animals.

In the industrial sector there are companies in the forestry, metal plants and textile factories. The service sector is made up from both the private sector and the public sector. In the private sector, the farm size is very small. Markets are held regularly in Boamang, Agona, and Wiamoase Bepoase.

Traffic

The district has a road network with a total length of 180.2 kilometers. Of these, over 90 percent of streets are sand tracks. The paved trails run through the district to connect with Mampong in Kumasi. Another route runs through the district between Kumasi and Offinso. A 2 km long paved path runs from the district capital of Agona after Wiamoase and between Ahenkro and Kyekyewere.

The District is a public health insurance system in the test phase. Here 7,000 people in the project are covered. 3000 thereof make a full contribution payments, 4000 to make a reduced contribution.

Representation of the people in the district

The district is having 72 members, led by the local people's representatives, the District Assembly (District Assembly). Of these 72 members, 48 are elected in free elections in the Assembly, another 21 are appointed. In district three city councils, nine district councils and 141 Dorfkommittees operate.

Between 2001 and 2002 a total of 4.29325 billion cedis (approx. € 429,000 ) was invested in development projects of the District Assembly. The funds came to one of the World Bank, but mainly from the HIPC Fund and other donors. Invested between 2003 and 2004, the District Assembly 35,907,953,295 cedis ( € 3.59 million ) in construction projects. The District Assembly also supported women's groups with 25.5 million cedis in July 2002. Tourism sector has been supported by public funds totaling 20 million cedis.

Population

In 1984 there were about 72,125 people in the district. Back in 2000, resulted in a census recorded a population of 119 930 people, in 2004 the number had increased to 139 057. These figures correspond to an average growth rate of 3.1 % per year. In the district 35.6 percent of the population live in an urban environment, 64.4 percent of the population live in rural areas. The district population is made up to 48.3 percent of men and 51.7 percent of women. The population between 0 and 14 years of age represents about 36.4 percent of the total population over 65 years are only 2.9 percent of the population. Consequently, approximately 60.7 percent of the total population in the economically productive age between 15 and 64 years.

Constituencies

In district two constituencies are reported for the Ghanaian parliamentary election results: First, the constituency Afigya - Sekyere West, for the Albert Kan - Dapaah for the party New Patriotic Party (NPP ) is started. Kan - Dapaah is one of the leaders of Ghana and acting Minister of the Interior in the cabinet of President John Agyekum Kufuor. For the second constituency Afigya Sekyere East Hennric David Yeboah is also recruited for the NPP in Parliament.
