Selandian

The Seelandium (also shortened to Seeland Seeland- stage or, less commonly also Selandian, Eng. Selandian ) is in the geologic timescale, middle stage of the Paleocene. It is therefore equated with the Middle Paleocene. The level corresponds in absolute terms ( geochronological ) was approximately the period from 61.6 to 59.2 million years ago. The Seelandium following the Danian and is detached from the Thanetium.

Naming and history

The Seelandium is named after the Danish island of Zealand, where deposits of this stage a large area to come to the surface. The stage was proposed in 1924 by Alfred Rosenkrantz.

Definition and GSSP

The boundaries have also not yet been conclusively determined. The end is provisionally defined with the base of magnetic polarity zone C26n - Chrono. The onset is within the short magnetic polarity zone C27r - Chrono. He is expected to be at the limit of foraminiferal Zone P2/P3a or P3a/P3b. An official type profile (Global Stratotype Section and Point) but of the International Commission on Stratigraphy ( International Commission of Stratigrapgy = ICS ) has not yet been determined.
