Selenium tetrafluoride is an inorganic chemical compound of the selenium from the group of fluorides.
Production and representation
Selenium tetrafluoride can be obtained by the reaction of selenium with fluorine.
Also possible is the representation by halogenation of selenium dioxide with sulfur tetrafluoride, boron trifluoride or hydrogen fluoride.
Properties
Selenium tetrafluoride is a colorless liquid which is miscible with sulfuric acid, ethanol, ether, and iodine pentafluoride. On contact with water it decomposes violently. Metal fluorides such as sodium fluoride, potassium fluoride, rubidium, cesium, and thallium (I) fluoride, selenium tetrafluoride dissolves in the formation of the metal complexes SeF5. It also attacks glass.
