Self-timer

A time delay release of a camera triggers the camera operation is delayed until after the expiry of a fixed or variable time out.

Applications

Self-timer are frequently used in two situations:

• A self timer allows the photographer to take a position, for example, in group shots, in which he himself is also the picture.
• With a self-timer shaky shots with longer focal lengths and exposure times can be avoided if there is no remote release is available. By pressing the release button, the camera, even if it is mounted on a stable tripod, wiggle in the first split seconds. Mechanical self-timer

Especially in mechanical cameras ( SLR and rangefinder cameras ) of the trigger offset is realized mechanically. This is accomplished by tensioning a movement device, which is actuated by means of spring force and gears with the delay release mechanism of the camera. A mechanical self-timer is usually mounted so that the end of the time delay set has a unique position of the lever (or similar) to detect. Mechanical camera models without built-in self -timer can use via the terminal for a cable release and external self-timer, the effect of the time offset similar to the spring biased force and mechanics.

Electronic self-timer

With electronic cameras after operating the self -timer, the expiration time is often indicated by a visual signal ( LED flashing or the built-in flash) on the camera front, the changes just before the shutter operation, the frequency of blinking or constantly lit. And acoustic signals are common.

The self-timer is i.d.R. specially adjusted before each use. Some digital cameras also have a mode in which the self-timer remains permanently activated and can be combined if necessary with the mirror lock-up.

Some cameras use the already existing timing also serves to implement interval shooting. Even external electronic controls with such functions are available.

Self-timer for film camera

In the earlier usual cine cameras in the higher price class self-timer were standard. Instead the chosen exposure time with the camera set the scene length expired, a lead time of 10 to 12 seconds was given.
