Selianitika

Selianitika (Greek Σελιανίτικα (n. pl. ) ) Is a village in the municipality of Symbolitia the community Egialia in Greece. It lies on the northern coast of the Peloponnese on the Gulf of Corinth, about 7 kilometers west of Egio and 30 km east of Patras. Selianitika has 1,147 inhabitants ( 2001).

Selianitika and its neighbor Longos are connected by a 1.5 km long beach. Both places are popular destinations during the summer months.

Geography and climate

The village lies on the Gulf of Corinth in beautiful surroundings with vineyards, olive and citrus trees. The nearest town to the east is 7 km away Egion. Patras, the third largest city in Greece and the administrative center of Achaea, is about 30 to 35 km away.

The center of Selianitika is about 30m above sea level. To place a part of an extensive beach of fine gravel, as it is commonly found in the Gulf of Corinth. The beach extends to the neighboring town of Longos and is known for its clean, blue translucent water.

At the beach you have a good view of the southern lying Klokos Mountains, on Panachaiko in the southwest and across the Gulf of Corinth over to the Phocis mountains in the north.

The region's climate is pleasant Mediterranean with mild winters and moderately hot summers.

Traffic

Apart from the old National Road ( Greek Palea Ethniki Odos Παλαιά Εθνική Οδός ) GR- 8, which connects the town with Egion, Patras and the neighboring villages, Selianitika also has a connection to the so-called new National Road ( gr Nea Ethniki Odos Νέα Εθνική Οδός ) ( GR -8A, Athens - Corinth -Patras ).

For the new Elefsina - Corinth -Patras- Tsakonaals expansion of national road GR -8A to motorway standard one exit for Selianitika / Longos is provided, the start of construction is expected in 2009.

Infrastructure

In Selianitika there is a primary school, the next secondary school and a secondary school located in Erineos and Egio. At the village square ( plateia) is the central church of the Holy Basilus, ATM National Bank of Greece, a supermarket and smaller shops, a newsagent with international newspapers and a post office, bakery and a candy shop. There is also a pharmacy and an English-speaking country doctor ( Agrotikos iatros ).

The nearest hospital is located in Egio; in only about 25 km away is the University Hospital of Patras, one of the largest hospitals in Greece.

Tourism

Selianitika for many Greeks, especially from Athens and Patras, summer destination. There are hotels, inns and along the beach promenade several restaurants where dishes of Greek cuisine. You can walk relaxed evening eating well and in the morning a good breakfast after a long night. More entertaining nightlife is ten minutes walk along the beach to find more in Longos or on the beach of Rododaphni, Akoli can be reached in five minutes by car.

In Selianitika mineral springs have been found and there is a small balneological spa.
