Selja is a village (Estonian küla ) in the rural community Käina ( Käina vald ). It is the second largest Estonian island of Hiiumaa ( German Dagö ).

Population

Selja has 66 inhabitants ( 31 December 2011).

Rudolf Tobias Museum

In the village is the historic Kusterhaus the nearby town Käina. There, the Estonian composer Rudolf Tobias was born into a large family in May 1873. He received his first music lessons from his parents. His father was John Tobias Küster and organ builder. The family left Hiiumaa in 1885, when Rudolf Tobias was twelve years old.

In the House today a comprehensive Museum about his Life and work is set up. It is since 1973 a branch of the Hiiumaa Muuseum.

" Widow's house "

In Selja was on the road between the villages Emmaste Käina and the so-called " widow's house ." It served as a retirement home for widows of deceased pastors and their frail relatives.

Later in the building a hospital was housed. The physician and microbiologist Endel Türi (1930-2007), who himself came from Hiiumaa devoted to reside there for the first time since 1959 medicinal mud from the Bay of Käina. With Türis departure at the Tartu State University the cure has been set. The house was later largely demolished.
