Selles-sur-Cher

Selles sur Cher is a municipality with 4606 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2011 ) in the French department of Loir- et -Cher and the capital ( chef-lieu ) of the eponymous canton in the Centre region. The community on the Cher River, about 60 kilometers east of Tours.

Creation and naming

Owes its existence to St. Selles. Eusicius, who lived here as a hermit and later founded an abbey. Accordingly, the name of the city from the Latin " cella " ( monk's cell ) derives. From " Cella Eusicii " was in the 19th century finally " Selles -sur -Cher ."

Historical Buildings

From the important abbey of the Middle Ages is only restored in the 17th and 19th century church of Notre -Dame- la- Blanche, Abbatiale Saint- Eusice obtained. In the crypt is the tomb of St.. Eusicius from the 6th century. The complete Romanesque facade of the building has columns and capitals that come from a destroyed by the Normans in 903 church.

Steeped in history is also the castle Selles, which goes back to a looped by Richard the Lionheart fortress on the Cher, which was built around 1212 again.
