Selwyn District

Selwyn is a farm on the South Island in New Zealand's Canterbury region district.

Geography

In the Canterbury level of the Waimakariri River forms a natural border to the north; further west, the border was drawn to the Hurunui District arbitrarily. To the west of the main crest of the Southern Alps forms the border with the West Country District in the West Coast. In the south is separated from Selwyn Ashburton District by the Rakaia River. And in the east the district eventually borders ( from north to south ) to the Christchurch City Council, to the former Banks Peninsula District, which is one of Christchurch since March 6, 2006, and by the Pacific Ocean.

Geographically, the district can - similar to the Timaru - divided into two areas: The Plain in the east and the highlands to the west.

In the plane, which is mostly covered with relatively dry grasslands ( the Canterbury Plains ), lives the majority of the inhabitants of the district. The highlands in the Southern Alps is inhabited only very sparse. Here are some nature reserves, including the Arthur's Pass National Park.

Population

At the 2006 census, the district counted 33,666 inhabitants. The largest settlement is Rolleston with about 4,000 inhabitants. Therefore, the district administration was moved from the smaller Leeston Rolleston after. The ten-year plan (2004-2014) for Rolleston, which is considered as a suburb of Christchurch, anticipates a population increase to about 10,000 inhabitants.

Economy

Prevailing economic sector is agriculture, the drier places cattle and sheep are kept in the rainier areas dominated by the dairy industry.
