Selz

Development plan

The 61 km long Selz is a left tributary of the Rhine and one of the main bodies of water in Rheinhessen ( Rhineland -Palatinate). With a runoff of only 2 l / s • km ² the current flowing in the wind shadow of the North Palatine hill country is one of the Selz per catchment area arid rivers of Germany.

Course

The Selz rises in the Palatinate in the north- Palatinate mountains on the edge of the village of Orbis, where their source of running water is signposted and can be visited. About 30 kilometers the Selz flows in a northeasterly direction. They happened after three kilometers, the border between the northern Pfalz and Rheinhessen and reached after a further eight kilometers, the small town of Alzey. There she crosses first a reservoir, then it is piped and flows underground through the city. After about half of its travel path through the Rhine-Hessian hills it bends in waders almost at right angles to the northwest from to lead after 63 kilometers in Ingelheim (district Frei-Weinheim ) into the Rhine. The average runoff volume is 0.77 m³ / s with a coefficient of variation of 0.3 to 20 m³ / s

In their way through the Rheinhessen Selz flows each left past four surveys that extend 100 to 150 feet above the level of the flood plain and part of the watershed between the Selz and the 10-16 km east flowing past the Rhine are:

  • Peter Berg ( 246 meters) between Gau- home and Bechtolsheim
  • Selzer mountain ( 237 meters ) between waders and Sörgenloch
  • Miihlberg (243 meters) in Nieder-Olm
  • Mainzer Berg ( 240 meters) between Swabia home and the Ingelheimer district Großwinternheim

History

Written occupied the Selz under the Veronese donation, in Verona his Lord Chancellor, the Archbishop of Mainz Willigis, the town of Bingen and the associated landscape presented with the June 14, 983 Emperor Otto II, the " on this side of the Rhine from the bridge extends over the Selzbach up to Heimbach, but from the point where the Elzbächlein flows across the Rhine in the same, up to the hamlet of Caub. "

1909 at Zornheim called Selztalstellung with the Fort Muhl was built as a major line of defense and a pretended bulwark of the German Empire against France, as there is from here a distant view of more than 30 kilometers above Rheinhessen time.

On Good Friday, April 20, 1962 came after heavy rains in the Selz Mauchenheim over the banks and flooded the lower village of Mauchenheim. The house of Anhäuser mill stood up to the ceiling under water and had to be demolished. Also the road to Alzey was doing so inundated with mud that the course was no longer recognizable.

Since 1992, the Selz and their floodplains are being restored piece by piece. Wetlands were created, flattened the bank and introduced trees fall, so that the Selz may seek a new way. Many amphibians, water birds and insects can be observed again since then. One of the first renatured sections is between Hahnheim and Sörgenloch.

Traffic routes

Bridges

About the Selz lead 137 bridges; for even distribution of the watercourse could cross all 460 meters. Most transitions, however, are only intended for agricultural traffic on the roads. Road bridges for general haulage are mainly located in or near the carrying places.

Selztal Cycle Path

From the source at Orbis about Alzey to Ingelheim runs along the Selz ausgeschildeter a walking and cycling route, which Selztalweg or Selztal bike path. It runs partly on or adjacent to the former railway tracks " Amiche " and " Zuckerlottche ".
