Selzthal is an Austrian municipality in the district court or the district Liezen in Upper Styria with 1658 inhabitants (as of 1 January 2013).

Geography

Selzthal lies at the confluence of the Enns and Paltental in Styria. Mountain and highest point of the municipality is the 1737 m high Dürrenschöberl.

History

The place is recognized as an independent community for about 100 years. Originally there were a few farmsteads at the foot of the local mountain, the 1738 meter high Dürrnschöberls that housed the first inhabitants. Gradually workers came specifically from the present Czech Republic in the valley to reduce peat, which was needed in the surrounding iron works as a fuel. It was not until the construction of the Crown Prince Rudolf railway in 1870 brought about the change to the " Railwaymen's community," than that of the place is still valid today. As a result Selzthal grew into a town with about 2,300 inhabitants. The church of the community served as a template for the construction of the Catholic Church Holy Name of Mary in Saxony Lobau.
