Semicarbazone

Semicarbazones are organic chemical compounds which, as functional group, the moiety

Included. One or more hydrogen atoms on the nitrogen may be replaced by organic radicals.

Production

Semicarbazones can be prepared from semicarbazide or its salts and carbonyl compounds such as aldehydes and ketones.

Use

Had semicarbazones, hydrazones and oximes similar, earlier analytical importance because its melting point is used to identify the underlying carbonyl compound. Furthermore, semicarbazones allow for the isolation and purification of carbonyl compounds used as semicarbazones can easily be hydrolytically cleaved again by the action of dilute acids.

A pharmacologically employed as an antiseptic semicarbazone is nitrofural.
