Semuc Champey

Semuc Champey (Eng. " where the water disappears / hidden ") is a nature reserve ( Natural Monument ) in Guatemala, located about 12 km south of the city Lanquín in the department of Alta Verapaz. This popular tourist destination is composed of many turquoise pools of one to three meters deep, which are fed from the river Río Cahabón. The color of the water varies depending on the season and time of day and the current weather. The river flows through it under the pool and re-enters from the rocks behind the pool. Due to the strong current of the river at this point is quite dangerous.

1999 was appointed Guatemalan Semuc Champey Natural Heritage by the then President Álvaro Arzú Irigoyen.

The hostels in Lanquín as well as some local tourist agencies offer tours to the pool as well as other tourist attractions in the area.
