Senanga

Senanga is a town with 10,000 inhabitants ( 2006 estimate ) in the Western Province in Zambia. To the west lies Sesheke, to the north, the provincial capital, Mongu. It is located 1,100 meters above sea level and is the seat of the administrative district of the same name with 109 119 inhabitants ( 2000 census ).

Economy

The surrounding area of Senanga continuously living with too little corn crops that are normally compensated with the harvests from the rainy north of the country. Since the prices are comparatively high, corn from the Far Tanzania is imported illegally, where prices are significantly lower. In addition, rice and cassava are grown.

There are sprawling floodplains of the Zambezi, where animal husbandry and fishery is operated, which is obviously more interesting than farming. It is the district with the highest number of cattle and flocks of the country. In the periodic floods of the rainy season cattle can be brought in dry locations. The crops in the fields are destroyed at high floods as in 2004.

Infrastructure

There is an unpaved, 1,200 -meter-long airstrip, a hospital with a new ambulance facility, primary and secondary schools, a hotel for safari tourists and the only gas station on the road between Mongu and Livingstone.

Senanga is located on the Zambezi River. South of the city performs a pontoon bridge for heavy vehicles traveling six miles the car ferry Mangweshi Ferry over the river, if the water level is sufficient. On the way to the northwest in the Liuwa Floodplain this is the last opportunity to cross the stream. For Sioma - Ngweizi National Park in the southwest can be use in Sesheke the Zambezi bridge.

Miss Zambia 2006 Katanekwa Matundwelo, TV spokesperson, was born in Senanga.
