Senarica

Senarica is a village in the Abruzzo region in central Italy. With a population of fewer than 300 inhabitants Senarica was for approximately four centuries until the end of the eighteenth century as an independent republic. It was the smallest state, which retained its independence so long, but today it is a district of the municipality of Crognaleto in the province of Teramo.

History

Senarica and the neighboring village of Poggio Umbricchio became independent 1343 when Queen Joanna I of Anjou granted the area independence, because the inhabitants rendered fierce resistance against the enemy forces under Ambrogio Visconti of Milan. Impressed by the splendor of the Doge's Republic of Venice, the ruler of Senarica took a similar republican government, with an elected doge as head of state.

Coat of arms

The coat of arms of Senarica was a black shield with a silver lion (symbolizing the state) who catches a silver snake. This coat of arms appeared on a golden Gonfanon and on the seal. In the cathedral of the village a reproduction of the lion, which is crowned in this particular image of a crown depends.
