Sender ID

Sender ID, and Sender ID Framework ( SIDF ) is a proposal of the working group of the IETF MARID to combat spam and is based on the Sender Policy Framework and Microsoft's Caller ID.

Due to serious differences within the working group they stopped the work on the specification of the Sender ID on September 23, 2004. The main reason for the failure is that Microsoft holds patents on key technologies of the Sender ID and this time set under a license available to the providers of free software made an implementation under the GNU General Public License, or similar open source license impossible.

Microsoft wants to increase in the future the use of transmitter ID by the in-house service MSN and Hotmail to classify incoming emails without Sender ID as potential spam. The reason given for this approach with a fairly large number of e -mails that would already have the characteristics of Sender ID. Experts criticize this approach and fear that Microsoft would force the industry to use a non- generally accepted standard. On 24 October 2006, Microsoft has released the Sender ID procedures under the Open Specification Promise project for any usage.
