Seneqerim-Hovhannes of Vaspurakan

Seneqerim John Artsruni, also Senek ʿ Erim (* 968/969; † 1024 or 1026/27 ), brother of Deranik was the last king of Vaspurakan of the dynasty of Artsruni. His name was derived from that of the Assyrian ruler Sennacherib, who was the ancestor of the dynasty. He ruled the time of Emperor Basil II. He built a church on the mountains varactor where the True Cross was published and a monastery at the foot of the mountain.

After invasions of nomadic Turkish 1016 and 1018 and a defeat by the Byzantines in 1021, his son David was negotiating with Emperor Basil II the exchange of the independent kingdom against a territory under Byzantine suzerainty. Seneqerim John went with his followers, according to the chronicler Thomas Artsruni in 1023 with 14,000 warriors, women and children to Cappadocia. Seneqerim John managed as magistros strategist of Cappadocia and titular king of his fief in Cappadocia and Armenia Minor of Sebaste.

The cities Arapgir and Akn are foundations of Artsruni in Cappadocia.

Seneqerim John was buried in 1024 in his old home in Vaspurakan varactor monastery. His wife Xošuš was also buried next to him. Vaspurakan remained Byzantine until the invasion of the Seljuk Turks in 1065.
