With the new direction of the district Bundang in the early 1990s, the city took on a completely different character. The population doubled, the infrastructure was renewed and especially the far middle bourgeois population shifted to the upper class of society.

In recent years there have been efforts to make Seongnam to Gwangyeoksi ( 광역시, big city ). This would make it administratively dissolved out of Gyeonggi-do and equivalent to a province. Be justified these efforts with the growing population, which has now exceeded the city Ulsan, and the fact that Seongnam slowly developed into an independent city with local industry. The big electronics company Kyung- Dong here has its headquarters.

In July 2010, the city should be merged together with the neighboring cities of Gwangju and Hanam to a new metropolis called Seonggwangha.
