Separate Reality (climbing route)

Separate Reality is a 20 m long climbing route in Yosemite National Park in California, USA. The route is known by its key location, an approximately 6 m long hand crack in a roof. The entry of the route is about 200 m above the Merced River is, but better achieved by abseiling from the top. The name is the novel " A different reality. New Conversations with Don Juan "(1971, original title: A Separate Reality: Further Conversations with Don Juan ). Carlos Castaneda removed.

The route was first climbed by Ron Kauk in 1978 and valued at the difficulty 5.12a (today 5.11d ) (French 7a/7b ). The reason for the fascination which exerts this route on climbers, however, is less the technical difficulty, but rather a certain exposure of the route and the associated requirements for the psyche. In 1986 the German exceptional climber Wolfgang Güllich a free solo ascending the route. The second rope free trapdoor succeeded in 2005 the Austrian Heinz Zak, who in 1986 Wolfgang Güllich had photographed during his floorboard.

In the summer of 2006, the American Dean Potter was the third climber commit this route free solo. In June 2010, she climbed Alex Honnold free solo climbers as the fourth.
