Separatory funnel

A separating funnel ( also separating funnel ) is a glass container, which is used in chemical laboratories for the separation of immiscible liquids.

The device has an above standard ground that can be closed with a stopper, and down a cock. When two immiscible liquids ( two phases ) was introduced (eg water and oil), then the liquid ( ie water and oil in the water ) gathers with the greater density below and can drained through the tap into another vessel be. The Tapered conical shape of the separating funnel facilitates an exact separation, so the closing of the cock, just before the lighter phase begins auszurinnen.

In the organic chemistry laboratory technique of separating funnel is used to extract substances from a solution. To this was added a solvent which dissolves better to be extracted substance, but is not miscible in the previous solution. After repeated shaking, phase separation, release, and addition of fresh solvent for extracting the material in the new solvent is enriched. This behavior is described for the solute with the Nernst distribution law. This combination, in laboratory jargon extraction liquid-liquid extraction is a separation processes and a cleaning method.
