Sepilok Orang Utan Sanctuary

The Sepilok Orangutan Rehabilitation Centre is located in the north of Borneo, about 25 kilometers west of Sandakan in the Malaysian state of Sabah.

The center was established in 1964. Immediately after the end of British colonial forest management began with means to protect the wildlife in the region. The 43 -square-kilometer nature reserve became a rehabilitation center for orangutans and has a center for the care of the great apes. Today, about 25 orangutans in the kennel of life, in addition to other free living in the reserve.

The center cares particularly true for rescued pups, which are found as a result of deforestation, illegal hunting or as pets. The orphaned orangutans train there, again to survive in the wild and are released as soon as possible. Today, about 60 to 80 orangutans live freely in the reserve. The nature center is a tourist attraction in Sabah.
