Sepp Piontek

Josef Emanuel Hubertus " Sepp " Piontek ( born March 5, 1940 in Breslau, Silesia ) is a former German football player and coach.

Career as a player

Piontek, began his career as a center forward at VfL Germania Leer, 1960 came to Werder Bremen. There he sat down by a left runners. He was there as a defender for Werder Bremen in the first year of the newly created Bundesliga. Already in the years prior to the Bundesliga he could win the DFB-Pokal with the people of Bremen on 13 September 1961 as a young defender. Between 1963 and 1972 he played in 203 Bundesliga matches for Werder Bremen, scoring 15 goals. In 1965 he became German Champion and in his most successful season as a player, he was also German national team. 1965 and 1966 he played six times for the German national football team.

He was with Werder Bremen again German vice-champion in 1968. In 1972, he then finished his career.

Career as a coach

As Piontek in 1972 ended his active career, he was immediately trainer at SV Werder Bremen and remained until 1975. Then moved on to Fortuna Dusseldorf, however, was the end of his first season in 1976 dismissed. Subsequently, he trained for two years the national team of Haiti, 1978/79 ultimately the FC St. Pauli.

1979 Piontek was appointed coach of the Danish national team. Piontek was recommended by DFB president Hermann Neuberger, but he was only third choice behind favored by the brewery Carlsberg Hennes Weisweiler and Helmuth Johannsen. When he took office, Piontek did not speak Danish. The Danish Association had indeed again and again produced outstanding players, but which are all played abroad and were not considered for the national team. Thus, the Danish national team was up to the attitude of Piontek rather an amateur team. Piontek, however, traveled twice a year through Europe, to look at Danish players and bring them into the national team. This was the beginning of the most successful period of Danish football. The of the Danish public initially ridiculed and by the media as "hard German " titled Piontek had managed to form a team of individualists.

1983 Pionteks Danes qualified for the European Football Championship 1984 in France and reached thanks to a euphoric offensive football semi-final in which they only failed on penalties to Spain. This updraft of the Danish football gave the Danish fans two years later the first participation in a World Cup. Under Piontek was the crew from Germany preliminary round group winners at the Football World Cup 1986 in Mexico. Here Germany was defeated 2-0 - Piontek is hereby beside Georg Buschner ( for the GDR at the World Cup 74 ) is the only German coach, who defeated a West German national team in a competitive match. Denmark, however, then lost in the second round against Spain clearly with 1:5, where Emilio Butragueño scored four goals.

Two years later, Piontek took part with Denmark for the second time at a European Championship. At the European Championships in Germany in 1988, the Danes had to go home after the group stage. In 1990, he was, after he had a year earlier failed to qualify for the 1990 World Cup, dismissed. In the same year he was coach of Turkey and coached them until 1993. Parallel he trained in 1993 for a short time the club Bursaspor. In 1995 he returned to Denmark and trained the first division club Aalborg BK, whom he led to the Champions League. From 1997 to 1999 he coached Silkeborg IF, before he provisionally ended his coaching career. A year later, he was coach of Greenland. In 2002, he finally ended his coaching career.

Piontek lives with his Danish wife on Funen and has one daughter ( born 1985 ).
