Septet

A septet (from Latin septem " seven " ) is in the music, a group of seven performers or a piece of music for such a group.

It has no strong cast tradition or genre emerged, but did Ludwig van Beethoven's Septet for clarinet, horn, bassoon and four string exerted a strong influence on the composers of their own and the following generation, and finally stimulated Franz Schubert to his octet.

Also in most other septets is a quartet of four ( mostly different ) strings a wind trio opposite; often but one of these instruments is replaced by a keyboard instrument. In the new music (see examples John Cage and Morton Feldman ) and some quite unusual, seemingly unbalanced instrumental combinations have been used.
