Septizodium

The Septizodium or Septizonium was a monumental fountain in Rome. It was built in AD by Emperor Septimius Severus in the year 203 and was part of the Palazzo del Settizonio, in which the first conclave was held in 1241 for the election of a pope. After suffering heavy damage - among other things probably by the troops of Charles V at the Sacco di Roma 1527 - the building under Pope Sixtus V was 1588/89 demolished.

The Septizodium was at the point where the Via Appia runs along the foot of the Palatine Hill. It was a monumental, probably three-story Fassadennymphäum, which was decorated with numerous statues. His plan is also shown on the Forma Urbis Romae, a monumental map of Rome, which was kept in the Temple of Peace.

After Septizodium the church of Santa Lucia was named in Settizodio, which was built in the immediately adjacent eastern part of the Circus Maximus.
