Sequani

The Sequani (Latin Sequani ) were a Celtic tribe in Gaul. Originally they settled probably the Seine Valley, but could be later in the area between the Saône, Rhône and the Jura mountains down. Its main town, was Vesontio, today Besançon.

In the dispute with the Aedui the called Sequani 72 BC the German king Ariovistus to help. 61 BC, the Aedui in the Battle of Magetobriga (La - Moigte -de- Broie ) were beaten in return occupied Ariovistus but large parts of Sequanergebiets. As part of the Gallic War and Gaius Julius Caesar fight against Ariovistus the Sequani were subjected to 58 BC and were since then under Roman rule. In the year 52 BC the Sequani fought on the side of Vercingetorix against Caesar. 21 AD they are involved in the riots of Julius Sacrovir. In the year 68 AD, they joined the rebellion of Gaius Julius Vindex, which was at the Battle of Lucius Verginius Rufus Vesontio of, the legate of the province of Upper Germany, dejected

Our knowledge of the Sequani is mainly narrated by Caesar's De Bello Gallico. The Roman province of Maxima Sequanorum (also Sequania, Sequanica or Sequanicum ) was named after this tribe.
