Serbian parliamentary election, 2008

On 11 May 2008, the early parliamentary election was held in Serbia.

Prehistory

After the declaration of independence by Kosovo on February 2008 and the subsequent recognition by several EU member states 17, there were profound disagreements over the future course of rapprochement with the European Union among coalition partners of the government. The government of Prime Minister Vojislav Kostunica suggested to the President on 10 March 2008, therefore, the dissolution of parliament before. President Boris Tadić ordered it on 13 March 2008 as proposed, the dissolution of parliament and new elections at the same time wrote on May 11, 2008, at which an election of the Provincial Parliament of Vojvodina and the local councils were scheduled.

Election process

There were also the Serbian citizens in Kosovo called to vote. Because of irregularities, the national election commission allowed the election in three polling stations repeat on 18 May. Parallel to the election of the Parliament ( Narodna Skupština ) were also held elections to the provincial parliament of Vojvodina, as well as the community and some city offices.

Result

The parliamentary seats were allocated according to proportional representation in the D' Hondt method. Were taken into account only those lists of candidates who received more than five percent of the total votes cast, with lots of national minorities were exempt from the five percent hurdle.

A total of 6,749,688 Serbian citizens were eligible to vote. Participated in the election have a total of 4,141,176 voters, or about 61%. In fact, 4,139,384 votes ballots were counted. Of these, 88 148 ( 2.13% ) were declared invalid and 4,051,236 as valid. Final result after counting of votes from all polling stations:
