Serbs in Austria

Serbs in Austria form the part of the Serbian diaspora in Austria and are considered in addition to the Germans and the Turks as the largest immigrant group in the country. The exact number of ethnic Serbs in Austria is not known as it is asked in the censuses only by nationality and native language and not by ethnicity. The total number of persons living in Austria Serbian descent is estimated at around 250,000. According to the Austrian census in 2001 then gave 177 320 people Serbian as their everyday language to, this includes duplication of information German / Serbian. 41 944 of these people had Austrian citizenship.

The first Serbs settled in Vienna already in imperial times, so about in the 18th century in Magdalenengrund. In greater numbers Serbs migrated in the 1960s, 1970s and 1980s as a so-called guest workers.
